A ramble on past comics [1/5]: AUTOBIO COMICS 2004-13
In between spasms of rage resulting from living in a failed state saddled with dead weight, I distracted myself by reflecting on some older work this past weekend. My website overhaul reminded me that many of my comics were created pre-social media so I’ll be sharing some bits/ commentary.
Early zines/ minicomics [1999 - 2006]: “Yo Banana Boy!” [taken from my freshman roommate’s favorite palindrome] was my first zine that dropped around Boston during my senior year in college. It consists mostly of sketchbook strips and is objectively bad, but it introduced me to some cool like-minded people and super-talented local cartoonists in the nascent days of e-mail. I drew a crude self-portrait on each cover and stole my own idea for the first issue of “Let’s Do This”.
The Bushwick Chronicles [2005]: I had the [mis]fortune of living in pre-gentrified Bushwick Brooklyn. Slightly annoyed at the time, but look back at the grime fondly now. Haven’t been back in ages.
Steranko [2007]: Long before I was remotely aware of his troubling sociopolitical stances, I was a huge fan and took note of my brief/ odd encounter with him.
Godard [2010]: An ill attempt at name-dropping some French New Wave to sound interesting.
Nudist [2011]: More weirdness in Brooklyn. We truly roll the dice living with strangers in overpriced cities.
Mushrooms [2010]: Still a personal favorite and definitively captures my friendship with Sam.
